This tool counts words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, and calculates estimated reading and speaking time as you type. Everything runs locally in your browser — your text is never sent anywhere.
Reading time is calculated at 238 words per minute (the average adult silent reading speed, per Brysbaert et al., 2019). Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, appropriate for a measured presentation pace. The keyword density panel strips common stop words so only meaningful terms appear.
Words are counted by splitting text on whitespace and filtering out empty strings. Hyphenated compounds (e.g. "well-being") count as one word. Numbers, abbreviations, and contractions each count as one word.
Reading time is based on 238 words per minute — the median adult silent reading speed measured across 190 studies by Brysbaert (2019). The actual speed varies by text complexity, familiarity, and individual reader.
Sentences are detected by splitting on terminal punctuation: periods, exclamation marks, and question marks, excluding common abbreviations. This is a heuristic — edge cases like "Dr. Smith said..." may slightly over-count.
